B, and more), then anytime I click on that, it will show locations where that character is mentioned. I can do a single search (and save it) that will find (Dr. LESS IMPORTANT DETAILS that drove my decision:Ĭan search a project with full-blown Regular Expressions (RegEx) which is HUGE once you know the basics. No doubt, some will stick with 1.9 even when 3 is released. BUT SERIOUSLY, 1.9 works well and if you have any hesitation, just stick with it until 3 is released.
SCRIVENER WINDOWS 3 BETA UPGRADE
If you bought Scrivener 1.9 recently, the upgrade to 3 is free. If I have to revert, I can (just save copies). It's a solid product and gives you most of the benefits.

THOSE IT WILL HELP: If you track things (characters, locations, research, notes, etc.), need section reorganization, etc., then consider Scrivener now, EVEN if it's Windows 1.9.

THOSE IT WON'T HELP: If you just write with few notes and don't bother tracking things like characters, locations, research sources, etc., AND if you don't do any major section moves, just use Word. My response: It depends on what kind of writer you are. i can't say at this point.Ĭaveat: I'm relatively new to Scrivener for Windows (started with 1.9xx. maybe releasing a product most beta users say works is a better option, even if it means opening themselves up to more bugs. its been so long now that i worry l&l will never be able to live up to the hype.

delay s3 and risk losing more and more business, or release a product with bugs that will no doubt foster complaints. Idk they are in an unwinnable spot right now. maybe when they release it though, us new users will be able to provide more bug hunting. i certainly won't be switching until its finally released. unless the beta is seriously crippled as a program, we are probably at the point where bugs can be fixed post release. but because last time they announced it was a flop, they are scared that might happen again. i appreciate how difficult making a new program is, and i don't mind it taking a while to build, but at this point when i see talk of scriv3 i see comments like "its totally fine, just use the beta it works fine aside from compiling" and that just tells me that l&l are AT the release stage already.
SCRIVENER WINDOWS 3 BETA UPDATE
(Anyone can download and try the Scrivener 3 for Windows beta by visiting our forums.) I’m aware that posting an update without being able to provide a concrete release date is not what many people were hoping for from us, but please watch this space, as we hope it won’t be too long before we have more news.L&l have that once-bitten feel to them. Our sincere thanks to our Windows users for their patience, and our Windows beta testers for their help throughout the development process. (Note to beta testers: a new beta will be available very shortly, before the current beta expires.) ( It’s not simply a matter of hiring more developers - besides, we have two skilled developers working on the Windows version and only one on the macOS/iOS versions.) Since then, development has been better focused and has proceeded much more smoothly, as we hope can be seen in the leaps and bounds in progress apparent in the latest beta versions available on our forums.
SCRIVENER WINDOWS 3 BETA CODE
(The Compile feature in Scrivener, having to be flexible enough to handle a wide variety of project structures, file formats and formatting requirements, is as feature-rich, complex, and contains as much code as some applications in their entirety, and we did not want to release without getting this right.) There were a few other areas that still required attention, too, but these were the most important problems that needed addressing.Īround the same time, we did an in-depth analysis of the bug and feature tracking systems used for Windows, as well as of our internal communications, with the aim of better understanding where we were going wrong and what we could do better.

SCRIVENER WINDOWS 3 BETA SOFTWARE
Particularly crucial were (1) ironing out a number of bugs (although many were minor and no software is completely bug-free, cumulatively there were enough to mean it wasn't up to release standard) and (2) refining the Compile feature to more closely match the Mac version and address important missing features.

We had hoped to release version 3 for Windows in early summer, but a thorough review of the code and app state led us to the reluctant conclusion that yet more work was needed. Please rest assured that our developers haven’t given up and are working harder than ever to finish it. We know our Windows users have been waiting eagerly for a long time, and once again, we are sorry for the delays. We owe our Windows users a status update on the long-awaited Scrivener 3 for Windows, which is now more than two years overdue based on our own (way over-optimistic, as it turns out) estimations.
